06/05/2005: "Hurry up and wait"

I passed the national certification exam for massage and bodywork yesterday morning!

I worked late the night before, then had to be at the testing center bright and early at 7:30 a.m. I woke up, wiped the sleep from my eyes, brushed my teeth and rolled in to the center wearing the same clothes I'd worn to work the night before.

The test itself wasn't that hard -- 160 multiple-choice questions, administered by computer. I actually felt guilty that the test wasn't harder; there were others at the testing center taking other exams and certifications for various careers, and I could hear a few of them diligently typing away at their computers, presumably on lengthy essay questions. Most of the people there were teachers taking some sort of teaching exam. I was the only LMT (licensed massage therapist) candidate. Another man was there to take the GMAT.

I was done in less than an hour and a half.

The state recognizes the national certification exam as its licensure exam -- for now. There have been rumors that the state is planning to break away and administer a separate test of its own, which would include a practical in which you'd have to perform a massage as part of your grade. So I wanted to get this test done ASAP, before they make the Big Change. That way I'm grandfathered in.

Next step: I'll have to send the state a copy of the results of the exam -- along with the requisite check. Then after a few more weeks of waiting for the bureaucracy to process me, they should send me a state license number, and I'll be an LMT!
